“Curing with light” can sound as if light directly turns a material solid.
In practice, a photoinitiator or photocatalyst absorbs light and generates reactive species. Those species then initiate polymerization of the monomers.
The key question is what absorbs which part of the spectrum. If the reactive component is designed mainly for UV, it may not respond efficiently to visible light. If a UV-blocking component absorbs the same wavelengths required for curing, less energy is available for the reaction.
VisCure’s current research is built around separating these optical roles. The UV-blocking function is retained, while the reaction that initiates polymerization is driven in the visible-light region.
It may look like a change in lamp color. Technically, it is closer to reassigning the roles of molecules and process energy.
