The first image many people have of a polymer is a long chain.
That image is useful, but chain length alone cannot explain polymer behavior. Even polymers with similar chemical compositions can behave differently depending on molecular weight, molecular-weight distribution, branching, crosslinking, and chain flexibility.
In an adhesive, these differences become especially important. If the material is too stiff, it may not wet the surface well enough. If it flows too easily, it may deform excessively under load.
Polymer design is therefore not a single objective such as “make it longer” or “make it harder.” It is the process of defining how the material should move under the conditions where it will be used and processed.
